Micro Moments of Joy

I live with two creatures who seemed inherently wired for joy, my dog Rumble and even my husband.

For Rumble, this might be a walk, a tennis ball, a particularly interesting smell, or a cuddle on the sofa (although that’s initiated as much by me as it is him!) Rumble doesn't wait for a holiday, a promotion or the weekend before allowing himself to feel happy. He embraces every moment with pure joy and wonder.

In many ways, my husband is much the same. Just this morning, on an otherwise ordinary grey Wednesday, he walked proudly into my office to show me the brunch platter he'd made for himself. No special occasion. Just genuine delight in a beautifully put-together morning feast. The moment was tiny but still brought sparkle to the day.

In our increasingly busy lives it’s normal, perhaps even sensible, to focus on just getting our heads down and getting the jobs done, but who said we can’t have a little fun with it. It doesn’t have to take up lots of time or be planned in advance.

So, here's a little challenge for you:

Increase your micro moments of joy

The first cup of tea or coffee in the morning. Fresh bed sheets. Calling a friend. Giggling with a loved one. Dancing to your favourite song. Whatever makes you smile.

What new micro moment could you create this week?

Maybe it’s not even about proactively creating the moments but just staying open and present to experience them as they arise. Life doesn't have to be extraordinary to feel joyful. Sometimes all it takes is a ridiculously good brunch platter on a Wednesday!

I'd love to hear yours. What's one small thing that brings you joy?
